Abstract
The question of how, precisely, to characterize the state of
belief has received quite some attention in recent literature.
Among other things, it is argued that it is only in terms of norms
for belief that belief can be distinguished from certain other
propositional attitudes such as assuming or imagining. We shall
discuss some such arguments, and suggest an alternative,
non-normative understanding of belief.
