Social and Moral Norms in Intentional Action

Tid og sted:  Oct 4, 2007 01:00 PM - Oct 6, 2007 02:00 PMOslo

October 4-6, 2007, University of Oslo

In the framework of this workshop, philosophers, social scientists and economists will present papers on various aspects of rational deliberation and choice. The intention is to explore how fairness considerations and moral norms affect decision making. There are, on the one hand, normative questions of how to define standards of fairness and how to justify the obligation to act in accordance with these standards. On the other hand, there are the descriptive questions of how people actually behave, which decisions they make, which role considerations of fairness play in their decision making, how they understand standards of fairness and which external factors play a role in shaping these standards. The workshop will explore questions concerning the normative-empirical interface of studies of fairness in human agency.

The workshop is organized by Professor Christel Fricke (CSMN) in cooperation with Professor Bertil Tungodden and Professor Alexander Cappelen (both economists from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration, Bergen, Norway), with Professor Raino Malnes (political scientist from the University of Oslo, Norway) and with Professor Hans-Peter Schuett (philosopher from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany).
